Hiring a family lawyer can be a time-consuming process but there are some simple ways that you can do it. The first thing that you want to do before you hire a lawyer is to do your research on the different lawyers in your area. If you are unaware of the family lawyers in your area, you can simply do a search online; there are even databases online that will help you find people in your area.
When you start to do your research, you first want to narrow down your search to lawyers that specialize in your case. You don’t want to hire an expert divorce lawyer if aren’t getting divorced. You can want to look at reviews on their website and other lawyer referral websites. You also want to talk to family and friends; they might be able to refer you to a lawyer that they used in the past. Call the lawyer or meet them in person. Most lawyers will take a meeting with you for free and some charge a small fee, it is up to you if you want to take a meeting with those ones. When you talk to the lawyer, there are some questions that you should ask them to better make your decision.
> Ask about their expertise? You can find out a lot about the lawyer if you ask what kind of case they handle and if they have won or lost them.
> Do they have the knowledge to handle the case that you are presenting them?
> Do they have the resources to handle your case, staff, technology, and so on? You don’t want to hire someone that has a high number of clients; this makes it hard for them to focus on each case properly.
> Do they talk to you in a professional manner and are they intelligent?
> Do they answer the question that you have completely and do they make it easy to understand?
> Do they show interest in your case and do they explain all of your options to you?
> Are they available and willing to speak on your behalf during hearing and trial and are they experienced enough for trial?
> Can they keep a schedule once my case starts and keeps it moving forward till the end?
> Do you think you can work well with this lawyer?
If you are still unsure of where to find a good family lawyer, then you might want to consider contacting your local state bar association. They can point you in the right direction and if you call them, they will give you a discount on your first meeting with the lawyer. They will only give you lawyers that are certified to practice law in your area and they have to update all of their credentials with them often. This will also help you avoid a judge or another lawyer questioning their qualifications.
